SOUTH WINDSOR, CT / April 2009

Best Places to Work 2009

Twenty-five companies were chosen as the Best Places to Work in Connecticut for 2009. In a ceremony hosted by the Hartford Business Journal, the rankings were revealed at the Best Places to Work annual, statewide event. The winners and 25 top-ranked were determined by an independent survey company, Best Companies Group, which works with local partners to identify and recognize those companies which have been successful in creating and maintaining workplace excellence.

"We are thrilled to honor the top companies in the State," said Gail Lebert, publisher of Hartford Business Journal, whose company produced Best Places to Work. "In this turbulent economic time, it is inspiring to see businesses committed to distinction, and not only surviving but thriving."

Best Places to Work in Connecticut was sponsored by: Hooker & Holcombe, Inc. and Connect-Ability (presenting sponsors); Salka Office Furniture; Joseph Merritt & Company; Robert Half. Event partners include: Clarion; Via Panera Catering; Connecticut Rental Center; Rider Productions; Affordable Signs & Designs; J. Fiereck Photography; Co-Communications, Marketing & Public Relations.

The top list of winners from the Hartford Business Journal’s Best Places to Work in Connecticut competition are companies demonstrating common characteristics that bring out the best in their employees and leaders and help them succeed even in a difficult economy. In each case, the employees who drive the businesses are motivated, empowered by management and highly productive. They turn out superior products and services to their clients and customers. They love what they do and it shows. Not surprisingly, companies where a strong team spirit prevails and employees are valued tend to be financially successful. Enthusiasm carries all the way to the bottom line.

The winning companies participated in a two-part survey about personnel policies and practices conducted by the Pennsylvania-based Best Companies Group, a third-party research firm that manages similar "Best" programs throughout the nation and Canada. The survey information was collected from both employers and employees and used by Best Companies to rank competing companies based on the quality of their workplaces. These companies are also good neighbors, ranking high year after year among top contributors to civic and charitable causes in dollars and volunteer participation. They look for community minded employees and give them the means to actively participate in a myriad of causes across the state. The selected companies demonstrate that success in business is more than a matter of products, branding and service. It’s also about the character of the organization as reflected in the contentment of its employees.

Aerodyne Alloys listed 18th in the top 25 firms. Describing life at Aerodyne, Dan Weinick, Manager of Human Resources, said, "A visitor to our company would observe constructive banter, smiling faces, maybe even a balloon-toss competition on a warm day. Our employees work hard, but we also have fun." The company rewards creativity and encourages open communication and employee input, he said. This make employees feel valued and results in greater productivity. Aerodyne Alloys is a community leader and supports many worthwhile charities. It’s a company that recognizes the importance of family and encourages employees to strive for balance in their work and family lives."
