First it was Flash Gordon, then Star Trek, then Star Wars; now its real world x-ray guns for high temperature alloy certification at Aerodyne Alloys

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT / June 2009

AERODYNE ALLOYS offers chemistry analysis for customers. What looks like a science fiction ray gun was originally developed for the Space Shuttle program at Marshall Space Flight Center, in Huntsville Alabama.

Aerodyne Alloys uses the newest Bruker S1 Tracer ™ primarily for metal alloy analysis applications. The handheld, portable wide range elemental analyzer provides a method for direct chemical analysis or material identification (sorting) from materials of various forms.

The device is based on energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence technology and uses an X-ray tube as its excitation source.

Aerodyne Alloys now provides essential information about the molecular structure of the high temperature alloys it provides to customers in key industry categories: Aerospace, Defense, Power Generation, Petrochemical, Medical and MRO, all of which require the highest standards in certification reports. “Quality assurance is absolutely key. That’s why every pound of bar and plate is certified,” said Greg Chase, President of Aerodyne Alloys.

The S1 is perfect for extremely rapid alloy analysis with Grade ID in one second and complete analysis in 2-3 seconds. Its large area X-Flash maintains outstanding energy resolution even at high count rates, resulting in operation that is 5-10 times faster than traditional handheld units.

The S1 is fully field portable allowing analysis to be carried out anywhere the raw materials are in the facility. A PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) computer is easily locked in place and provides the user interface for analytical modes such as view spectra and save data. Controls and display are viewed on the color touch screen.

Whether the S1 is handheld or stationary bench-top mounted, Aerodyne Alloys assures customers of the very highest quality technology analysis. “It’s another commitment we’ve made to provide added value in our customer relationships,” said Jeff Adams, Inside Sales Manager.
